Health

While the Sphynx is a relatively healthy breed, there are some breed-specific health issues to know about:

  • Respiratory issues in kittens due to lack of hair

  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a form of heart disease

  • Hereditary myopathy, affecting muscle function

  • Sensitive digestive systems

  • All cats have the potential to develop genetic health problems, just as all people have the potential to inherit a particular disease.

  • The Sphynx is generally healthy, but he may develop certain conditions, including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and a neurological disease called hereditary myopathy.

  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the most common form of heart disease in cats and causes thickening (hypertrophy) of the heart muscle. An echocardiogram can confirm whether a cat has HCM. No one can guarantee that their cats will never develop HCM.

  • Hereditary myopathy affects muscle function. It eventually causes death when the cat is no longer able to swallow. Fortunately, the condition is rare and breeders are working hard to eradicate it from the breed.

  • The Sphynx can also be prone to some skin conditions, such as urticaria pigmentosa and cutaneous mastocytosis, as well as to periodontal disease. Teach your car to let you brush his teeth with a vet-approved pet toothpaste for good overall health and fresh breath.

  • Remember that after you’ve taken a new kitten into your home, you have the power to protect him from one of the most common health problem: obesity. Even though the Sphynx has a Buddha belly, he shouldn’t be overweight. Keeping a Sphynx at an appropriate weight is one of the easiest ways to protect his overall health. Make the most of your preventive abilities to help ensure a healthier cat for life.

The Need for Heat

  • When was the last time you ran around the house naked? In countries that have cold winters, your power bill will need to rise as a Sphynx needs to be warm all of the time (not just when humans are in the house). If you don't leave the heaters on, then you will need to purchase a heated cat igloo or make sure they have a warm bed with pillows that gets plenty of sun.

  • If you look through pictures on the Internet you are bound to find some of a Sphynx dressed in a warm jumper or t-shirt. Be careful when putting clothing on your new friend! Some cats are fine with it and appreciate the warmth, but many become confused and unhappy if you try to dress them. They might tip over, freeze in one place like a statue, or become withdrawn. If you decide to get your buddy a sweater, pay attention to how it is behaving and make sure it is okay with the change. If it doesn't like wearing clothing, you'll just have to make sure there are warm spots available for it to sleep.
